CALIFORNIA SECURITY GUARD TRAINING
A security guard in California must have in his/her possession a valid security guard registration or a screen-print of the Bureau's approval from the Bureau's web site at www.bsis.ca.gov, along with a valid photo identification, before working as a security guard. Security guards are employed by licensed private patrol operators to protect persons or property and prevent theft. To be eligible to apply for a security guard registration, you must: Be at least 18 years old; undergo a criminal history background check through the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); and complete a 40-hour course of required training. Bureau. The training above does not authorize you to carry a firearm while working as a Security Guard. To be eligible to apply for an Exposed Firearms Permit, you must: Be a citizen of the United States or have permanent legal alien status; not be banned from owning or possessing any firearm pursuant to State or Federal Law; undergo a criminal history background check through the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); and complete an 8+ hours course in the carrying and use of firearms.

CALIFORNIA BSIS-CERTIFIED BATON TRAINING
New Requirements for Baton Permits:

Applicants for an initial baton permit, and those renewing an existing baton permit, must complete a baton training course at a licensed Baton Training Facility.

Applicants must submit a complete application and fee directly to the Bureau.

All baton permits will be subject to expiration and renewal every two years.

Initial Application/Training Requirement:

The California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) fee for the initial baton permit is sixty ($60) dollars (This fee is not included in the class fee. The fee must be paid directly to BSIS after the submission of the renewal application.).

Prior to applying for a baton permit, applicants must complete the required baton training course specified in Business and Professions Code (BPC) Section 7585.9.

The baton permit application requires a licensed Baton Training Instructor to complete a certification page, included with the application, certifying completion of the training.

Renewal Application/Training Requirement:

The California BSIS renewal fee is forty ($40) dollars (This fee is not included in the class fee. The fee must be paid directly to BSIS after the submission of the renewal application.).

Permit holders need to complete the training specified in BPC Section 7585.9 within six months prior to the expiration date.

The renewal application requires a licensed Baton Training Instructor to complete a certification page, included with the application, certifying completion of the training.

An expired baton permit cannot be renewed. If your baton permit expires before it is renewed, you must apply for an initial permit.
